Fun Fact of the Day

Did you know that elephants are the world’s largest land mammal?  They can use their trunk like a snorkel to swim, and they can charge at almost 25 miles per hour.  They’re amazing animals.  But there’s one thing elephants can’t do.  Elephants can’t jump!

Can you write me a fact file on an animal of your choice?

Where does it live?

What does it eat?

Does it live alone or in a group?

Can you draw a picture of it?

What is it good at? Not good at?

Any fascinating facts about it?

Discussion of the Day.

Are dogs better than cats? Yes, or No?  Why?

Any problems please get someone at home to get in touch with either Mrs. Davidson or Mrs. Roebuck.

Have a good day and a very happy Easter.

Extra Activities – ‘Easter Eggs’ – Exploration Sheet

I have included this sheet which contains a variety of activities for you to try.  You don’t have to do them all at once, they can be worked on anytime this week.  Today you could look at the ‘DISCOVER’ section on ‘Faberge Eggs’.

Extra Activities – ‘Times Tables’

Keep looking at the ‘Times Tables’ Easter activities for you to work on if you have access to a printer.

Extra Activities – Easter Cards

I have also added a file to create your own Easter card if you are able to print it off.

If you can’t print, below is a link to a YouTube video about how to make a different ‘pop up’ Easter card with step by step instructions.

There is also a great website for times tables if you want a change from TTRockstars.  It's called 'Hit the Button'

There's a link below:

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button

Fun Fact of the Day

Did you know that to measure how ‘hot’ a pepper is, scientists use a scale called the Scoville Heat Unit?  A sweet bell pepper has a Scoville rating of 0 units, while a jalapeno’s rating is between 2,500 and 8,000 units.  The hottest known pepper (so far!) is the Carolina Reaper at 1,641,000 units!  That’s 200 times hotter than a jalapeno!  Taking a bit out of one of those can be dangerous – even deadly!

The Carolina Reaper!

Imagine you had invented a new ‘hot’ drink!  What would it taste like?  What would you call it?  How warm would it make you when you drank it?   When would you need to drink it?

How about a ‘cold’ version drink too?  What would that be like?

Discussion of the Day.

Would you prefer a camping holiday or a holiday in a Hotel?  Why?

Any problems please get someone at home to get in touch with either Mrs. Davidson or Mrs. Roebuck.

Have a good day.

Extra Activities – ‘Easter Eggs’ – Exploration Sheet

I have included this sheet which contains a variety of activities for you to try.  You don’t have to do them all at once, they can be worked on anytime this week.  You could start with a poem maybe?  An acrostic poem uses the letters of the words EASTER EGG down the side and starting the word on each line with that letter.

I have added in some ‘Times Tables’ Easter activities today for you to work on if you have access to a printer.

Did you know that the largest decorated Easter egg is 15.02 m (49 ft 3 in) tall and 8.72 m (28 ft 7 in) in diameter, and was created by Associação Visite Pomerode (Brazil) in Pomerode, Santa Catarina, Brazil, on 9 March 2019?

Can you design and decorate your very own Easter Egg?

Could you draw or even make it?

What colours would you use?

What patterns would you choose?

What type of chocolate would you put inside?

Extra Activities – Easter Cards

I have also added a file for you to create your own Easter card if you are able to print it off.

If you can’t print, below is a link to a YouTube video about how to make a different ‘pop up’ Easter card with step by step instructions that you can use ordinary card and paper from home to make.

Fun Fact of the Day

Imagine sleeping on a bed made of …. salt.  Or sitting on a chair made of …. salt.  In a room where the walls are – you guessed it – made of salt!  The ‘Hotel De Sal Luna Salada’  (Google it!) and other hotels around the ‘Salar de Uyuni’ are made almost entirely of salt, from the walls and ceilings to the furniture! But there’s absolutely no licking allowed!

Imagine you had to design your own hotel out of ‘sweets and chocolates’, what would it look like?  What sweets would look best where?  Can you draw and label a picture of it for us?  Also write a paragraph about it and say why you chose the sweets or chocolates for the job?

Discussion of the Day.

Which chocolate is best ‘Cadbury’s’ chocolate’ or ‘Galaxy’ chocolate - Why?

Which type of chocolate is best, Milk chocolate or White Chocolate? Why?

I have also uploaded a ‘Story of Easter’ book which you can read to learn about the Christian festival of Easter.  The file was too big to upload in one go, so I have put it across 2 files.

There will be some follow up activities later in the week.

Remember there is also the ’30 day Lego challenge’ for you to enjoy! Send us some photos of your creations, we’d love to see them.

There are also some other activities in the folder including some ‘Mixed up Fairy Tales’ work and a fun ‘Bingo’ activity sheet!

You could also choose another ‘Sights and Sounds’ photograph which asks you to think about what you would see or hear if you were in any of the places in the photos.

Fun Fact of the Day

Butterflies may look dainty and delicate, but they are pretty tough travellers!  The monarch butterfly travels up to 2,750 miles from Canada to Mexico (look that up on a map!) in its migration to a warmer winter climate.  But the painted lady butterfly flies even further – about 4,000 miles from North Africa to Iceland, (look that up on a map too!) all while flapping its wings about 20 times per second.

Can you draw a butterfly of your very own?  What colours would it be?  Remember it is symmetrical (the same on both sides).  What name would you give it?  Where would it live?

Discussion of the Day.

Which do you like better, a day playing in the snow in winter or a day playing at the seaside in summer? Why?

Below is a link to a music app which we haven’t really used in school but looks pretty good for composing your own songs!  The buttons at the bottom can be pressed to change the type of instrument etc.  You can then press the play button to hear your creations!  Good luck!

The Year 3 Team

Friday 27th March 2020

Good Morning Year 3!  Day 5 is here and it’s nearly the weekend!  We hope you are all doing ok.  The weather has been great for getting out into the garden or taking your daily exercise!  Thank you if you sent in any photos, we have uploaded some of the ones we have had in so far.  Please state in any email if you do not wish your photos to be shared on the website.

Work for today – Friday 27th March 2020

Please complete the following pages from your booklets:

Maths – Daily Rapid Reasoning Activities – Week 1 Day 5.

Maths – Daily 5-minute Fluency Activities – Week 1 Day 5.

English – Reading Comprehension – Page 5 ‘Amazing facts about the human body’

English – SPaG Activities – Spring Term SPaG mat 2.

The ‘Maths Revision’ booklet is also in the pack we sent home last week.  Please feel free to have a go at it when you like.  There are a range of questions in it so you can work on a certain section or go through it in order if you prefer.

Remember you can also go onto TT Rockstars to keep your skills sharp!  I have set up a class battle between the two year 3 classes which means the more you play, the more points you earn for class!  3V are still winning, but 3D are catching up!

You can also read your reading book or choose one you enjoy from home.

We know there won’t be the usual ‘Egg Competition’ this year but we still want to encourage you to work on it and send us a photo for display on our class page!  Also have fun with Lego and construction toys.

In the ‘extra activities’ tab today I have added a ’30 day Lego challenge’ for you to enjoy!  Send us some photos of your creations, we’d love to see them! Remember there are also some other activities in the folder including some ‘mixed up fairy tales’ work and a fun ‘Bingo’ activity sheet!  You could also choose another ‘Sights and Sounds’ photograph which asks you to think about what you would see or hear if you were in any of the places in the photos.

Fun Fact of the Day

Have you ever heard of the word ‘horsepower’? It’s used to describe how powerful a machine is, especially a car.  This measurement was first created by Isaac Watt in the 1700’s.  He wanted to help farmers understand just how powerful his steam engine was compared to that of a horse!  One horsepower is the amount of power needed to move 250 KG across a distance of 30 c.m in one second!  The average F1 car has a horsepower of about 750 horses!

Can you design and draw (or even make!)  your very own ‘vehicle’?  It could be a car, lorry, submarine, train, motorhome, racecar, motorbike etc.

What would it look like?  Who would it be for?  Does it have any ‘special’ features?

Discussion of the Day.

Are books better than television?  Yes, or No? Why?

I know that this website is offering free maths resources and activities, here is the link but you must register to activate it for yourself.  It does say there may be a delay in getting the login details due to the unprecedented number of people registering for it!

In the two extra tabs, you can see photos you have sent in to us and in the other you will find some ‘extra activities’ for you to consider doing including some ‘mixed up fairy tales’ work and a fun ‘Bingo’ activity sheet!

Today I have also added some ‘sights and sounds’ photographs which need you to think what you would see or hear if you were in any of the places in the photos.

Fun Fact of the Day

Did you know that the deadliest creature on land or sea is the sea wasp jellyfish?  Its body can grow to the size of a basketball, but its tentacles are 3 to 4.5 metres long – and there are 60 of them!  Each one is covered with stinging cells.  Sea wasps jellyfish simply swim along, waiting for prey to get trapped in their tentacles.  If a person were to get tangled up in those tentacles they could die in just four minutes!

Can you design your very own ‘fierce creature’?  It could live on land or in the sea. Draw it in as much detail as possible label it too.

Also write me a paragraph about it, you can consider these things:

What would it look like?

Where would it live?

How does it move?

What are its ‘deadly’ abilities?

How big is it?

Discussion of the Day.

Should children get pocket money? Yes, or No? Why?

Fun Fact of the Day

Did you know that the Earth has not just one but two moons?  Well, not exactly.  Earth’s “second moon” is actually an asteroid, but it orbits around the Earth just like the Moon.  The asteroid 2016 HO3 -  is probably about 35-90 metres in size.  It was first spotted by scientists in Hawaii on April 27th, 2016.

Can you find out any more fun facts about the ‘Moon’ today?  Can you draw a diagram showing me the phases of the moon?  Can you write a short factsheet about the moon?

NASA is currently making its entire library of photographs available for free to look at.  Here is the link.

https://images.nasa.gov/

There are options to just choose images etc.  What fabulous photos there are of all the wonders of space.

There is also a section dedicated to students.  It’s clearly American based with the school grade system but the activities look interesting anyway.

Tuesday 24th March 2020

Good Morning Year 3!  Day 2 is here.  We hope you got on ok yesterday.  Thank you if you sent in any photos, we will publish them at the end of the week on our year group page if we have permission to do so.

Work for today – Tuesday 25th March 2020

Please complete the following pages from your booklets:

Maths – Daily Rapid Reasoning Activities – Week 1 Day 2.

Maths – Daily 5-minute Fluency Activities – Week 1 Day 2.

You can also read your reading book or choose one you enjoy from home.

There’s no right or wrong way to work from home but we think if you set yourself ready to work from 9.00 a.m. and plan in breaks as we do at school, you will soon settle into a routine.

Our mornings are usually spent doing English and Maths and the afternoons are usually spent on our other areas of the curriculum.  We don’t mind the order you do them in but try your best to complete as many as possible.

How you use the afternoons is up to you.  Some may spread the tasks out all day, others may wish to have more creative or active afternoons! That’s fine!

We know there won’t be the usual ‘Egg Competition’ this year but we still want to encourage you to work on it and send us a photo for display on our class page!  Also have fun with Lego and construction toys.

Fun Fact of the Day

Did you know that when it’s summer in the U.K it’s winter in Australia?  That’s because for half the year the top half of the Earth (or Northern Hemisphere) is tilted more toward the Sun, so it has warmer seasons of spring and summer.  At the same time, the bottom half (or Southern Hemisphere) is tilted away from the sun, giving it autumn and winter.  For the other half of the year, the Earth tilts the opposite way – so the seasons are reversed!

Can you find out any more fun facts about the ‘seasons’ today?  Can you draw a picture showing me what you like to do or things that happen in nature in each of the 4 seasons?

Discussion of the Day.

Should animals live in a zoo?  Yes or No? Why?

Fun Fact of the Day

Did you know that hippos have pink sweat?  Special sweat glands in their skin put out an oily, reddish pink liquid.  This sweat isn’t for cooling them off, it’s a moisturiser, antibiotic and sunscreen all rolled into one.  As it turns out, hippos have very sensitive skin!

Can you find out any more fun facts about ‘hippos’ today?  Can you draw a picture of a hippo?
