Diversity, Equality, Inclusion & Belonging (DEIB) including Fundamental British Values & Protected Characteristics.

    In the Classroom

At Kirkby Woodhouse School, we ensure that the books and resources we use reflect modern society so that all children see themselves represented in their learning. We provide regular opportunities for pupils to express their voices and reflect on key questions raised in assemblies and classroom teaching.

Our curriculum fully incorporates DEIB principles. Embedded within our core values—Take Care, Integrity, and Be Engaged—we encourage children to discuss fairness openly and equip them to stand up against prejudice and unkindness.

    Beyond the Classroom

Visits, guest speakers, and community events play a vital role in broadening our pupils' horizons. Our close links with St John’s church and outreach workers provide first-hand experiences and opportunities for children to learn about the wider community, fostering curiosity and respect for different cultures, backgrounds, and ways of life. Through meaningful engagement with diverse communities, we prepare our pupils to thrive as open-minded global citizens.

    Ensuring all are Included

At Kirkby Woodhouse School, we ensure every child belongs by combining adaptive, high-quality teaching and an inclusive culture. Teachers tailor learning strategies to make lessons accessible to all cohorts, while trips, clubs, and enrichment activities are carefully planned to eliminate physical and logistical barriers. By closely tracking attendance and well-being, we step in early with targeted support when needs arise. Guided by a relational approach, we foster emotional safety and true belonging, giving pupils a genuine platform to shape school life through our Pupil Parliament, OPAL Play leaders, and values-led curriculum.

    Belonging and Protected Characteristics

    British Values

At Kirkby Woodhouse Primary School, fundamental British values are woven into the fabric of daily life. We cultivate a safe, inclusive environment where pupils learn to think critically, challenge prejudice, and discuss key concepts around equality, citizenship, and belonging. By empowering children to reject stereotypes and respect diversity, we prepare them to become thoughtful, active, and responsible citizens.

    We champion these values through:

    • School Ethos & Policies: Lived out in our core values, positive behaviour practices, and anti-bullying approach.
    • Curriculum & Pupil Engagement: Embedded across PSHE, RE, Humanities, English, regular assemblies and Pupil Parliament.
    • Enriched Learning: Reinforced via school displays, home-school communication, educational visits, external visitors and OPAL play leaders.
