OPAL

Reminders

All children must have a pair of wellies in school. After the October half term, wellies will need to be worn every lunchtime.

Children will be going outside in all weathers, so please make sure they have a fully waterproof coat. Waterproof trousers are optional.

Both items are available to order from our uniform shop, Sabre Sports, for a total of £9.99.

We are absolutely thrilled to announce the launch of our exciting new project that will transform playtimes at KWS!

In partnership with the amazing Outdoor Play and Learning (OPAL) Primary Programme, we’re gearing up to make playtimes more fun, active, and inspiring than ever before.

What is OPAL?

OPAL is an award-winning programme that has been revolutionizing school play for over 20 years! Used by more than 800 schools worldwide—from the UK and Spain to Canada, France, and New Zealand—OPAL won the EU’s Best Active Schools Programme award in 2018 and has been highly praised for its amazing impact on children’s wellbeing and learning. In 2019, it also secured funding from Sport England to spread its benefits even further.

This project is all about giving our children more freedom and opportunities to be active, creative, and social during playtimes. Did you know that kids spend around 20% of their primary school time playing—equal to about 1.4 years? We want to make sure that time is meaningful, joyful, and full of learning.

But here’s the thing—outside school, many children don’t get enough play:

  • The average screen time per day is a whopping 6 hours
  • Outdoor playtime averages just 5 hours a week
  • Over half (56%) of UK children only play outdoors with friends at school

We’re ready to change that!

How can you help?

Our children will be introduced to the exciting world of OPAL during weekly assemblies. We’ll also be sharing all the latest updates with you via email and posting them on  this page. Please keep an eye out.

Opal will see children playing outside in all weathers. Please ensure your child has a pair of labelled wellies in school and a waterproof coat is sent in everyday.

To make playtimes truly fantastic, we need your help collecting loose parts—these are fun, moveable items children can use to build, explore, and create endlessly! The items we are looking for will enable us to enjoy a wider range of play experiences during playtime (see below for some examples):
