Phonics

At Kirkby Woodhouse School, we use the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds systematic synthetic phonics programme (SSP).

This is a fully comprehensive programme that teaches and supports reading, through phonics throughout the whole school.

Children start by identify different sounds in Nursery, then learning single letter sounds (phonemes) in the Autumn Term of their Reception year and building  progressively through to Year 1, preparing children for the statutory phonics screening that takes place at the end of Year 1 whilst ensuring children are reading with fluency and accuracy, ready to begin Year 2.

Any children that are assessed to still need support with their Phonics and early Reading journey beyond Year 1 will follow the Rapid Catch Up programme. This programme closes gaps in phonics and reading to enable children to be able to fully access the Key Stage 2 curriculum.
