Art and Design

Curriculum Intent

At Kirkby Woodhouse School, the Art and Design curriculum will PROVIDE children with the essential knowledge, skills and experiences they need to become resilient and creative learners. It is designed to facilitate children practising new skills as well as building upon those learnt previously. It will PROVIDE children with a clear structure that enables them to use their skills – engaging, inspiring and challenging them to plan, create and improve their own works of art, craft and design.

Through the use of sketchbooks, children will be able to become more reflective of their work and understand the importance of revisiting and improving their own work. They will also use specific vocabulary to evaluate and appraise works of art.

Learning experiences are ENHANCED by linking art and design opportunities across the curriculum, allowing children to apply new knowledge and skills within the context of their topic, as well as explicitly being taught about artists from the past.

The Art and Design curriculum ENHANCES learning experiences through partnerships with local art and craft centres, allowing children to work with, and learn from, working artists. Through a model of PROVIDING, ENHANCING and ENRICHING learning experiences, and embedding a Take Care ethos, we support children to go Beyond Expectations.
